Transcript by Newsy

BY MEREDITH BALDWIN

ANCHOR MEGAN MURPHY

Its name is Hugvie - but to most, this new techie toy is just a little too creepy. DigInfoshares the product demo out of Japan.

“The Hugvie is a cushion in a minimalistic human form. It contains a pocket in which you can put your mobile phone transforming it into a physical communication medium.”

The idea behind this pillow of a friend is that you feel closer to the person on the other end of the phone. So the creator has lined the robot with vibrating mechanisms that pulse like a real heartbeat during your conversation. CNN isn’t sold.

“Again, assuming we’re taking this development seriously, it falls in an interesting (and/or terrifying) line of devices that aim to connect long-distance communicators via touch, or to enhance media-viewing with haptic feedback.”

CNN’s not the only one. Gizmodo Australia gives the creator the benefit of the doubt…but isn’t too sure the design works.

“This is one of those concepts that has noble intentions — I think — but comes across as just a little weird. Maybe a whole lot weird. It’s a mobile phone pillow/robot with inbuilt vibration motors designed to make mobile calls a lot more personal.”

And even though UberGizmo doesn’t think this robot is worth the squeeze, they let you know just how much it’ll cost to get your hands on it.

“Expect the Hugvie to retail for approximately $60, and it does not seem too enticing to own one as it scares the pants out of me – reminding me of those pick-me-up dolls that open their eyes when you do so.”

Right now the Hugvie is only being sold in Japan. But if the rest of the world needs a little love, the creator says he’ll export his friendly invention.

BY LOGAN TITTLE

Apple appears to be just as savvy with savings as they are with gadgets.

The New York Times revealed the company has found ways around the tax code over the years — amounting to a few billion dollars in tax savings.

ABC’s WXYZ explains—

“Instead of collecting and investing its profits in California where the corporate tax rate is almost 9%, we’re told it sent its funds to Reno, Nevada where its 0.”

And that’s only in the U.S. Transactions routed through Luxembourg and other places in the European market allowed for low-rate taxing as well.

A writer for the Business Insider summed up a few more strategies.

“Apple is getting tax credits from California for conducting ‘research and development’ in California … Apple makes sure that salespeople located in high-tax countries are actually employed by Apple subsidiaries in low-tax countries … many global ‘iTunes’ sales legally happen in Luxembourg …This dodges taxes in the U.S … and other countries that would charge much higher rates.”

And Apple isn’t the only one taking advantage of tax-code loopholes. A former Treasury Department economist told the New York Times it’s common—and legal.

“’Apple, like many other multinationals, is using perfectly legal methods to keep a significant portion of their profits out of the hands of the I.R.S … And when America’s most profitable companies pay less, the general public has to pay more.’”

But Care2.com says—while this is all legal—it doesn’t look very good next to the $9.2 billion budget crisis in California.

“The result is that, even while the technology industry is increasingly the largest and most valued in the U.S., government and corporate data reveal that such companies are the least taxed.”

Apple sent a response to the New York Times that can be seen on their website.

LinkedIn today launched its newest office in Hong Kong. This is a post from Arvind Rajan, Managing Director and Vice President of APAC and Japan at LinkedIn.

Arvind Rajan said:

I am told by our new colleagues that the number 9 bears auspicious meanings in Hong Kong which gives me double the pleasure to officially openLinkedIn’s newest international outpost – our 25th office globally and our 9th in Asia Pacific.

Hong Kong’s skilled talent base and its reputation as a leading international center of finance and business make it an important market for us, and we’re thrilled to be expanding our footprint in the region at a time when professionals in Hong Kong are placing a growing emphasis on social media. We’re looking forward to learning more from our users and customers here, to better understand their needs and support them in enhancing their professional lives.

This is the latest development in our steady Asian expansion – there are already more than 25 million members in Asia Pacific and Japan, using LinkedIn to build their professional brands, grow their network of connections, and seek professional insights. We’re bullish about continued membership growth in the region, and to that end we’ve recently launched Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia and Korean language versions of LinkedIn.com, and opened offices in Japan and Singapore last year. It’s a reflection of our strong global growth – this year alone, we’ve also opened an office in Spain and launched Polish, Czech, and Dutch language versions.

To see how we’ve grown in Asia Pacific and some interesting facts about our presence in Hong Kong, check out this neat infographic that the team has put together.

Activity appears below the redesigned stories in Discover. Now you can tap any story once to see Tweets about a particular trend or news article. You can then read the entire story or join the conversation by replying, retweeting or favoriting related Tweets.

Search

Search is now simpler in both mobile apps. You can see suggestions for different spellings and related terms for your queries. Finding the people you’re looking for is faster, too. In the Connect tab, you can start typing the first or last name or username of the person you’re looking for and the name will autocomplete for people that you follow.

We’ve also made a few improvements specifically for iPhone: when you tap the search box in Discover, you’ll see your most recent queries. You can also go directly to someone’s profile when searching for a username in Connect.

Notifications

Lastly, we’ve added push notifications for Interactions, so you can know immediately when your Tweets have been retweeted or favorited, or when somebody new follows your account. You can manage your push notifications settings to stay as connected as you’d like.

Download Twitter for iPhone today from the App Store and Twitter for Android in Google Play.

This update was a great collaboration between many teams at Twitter including Android, iOS, Discover, Search and others. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this effort.

Transcript by Newsy

BY EVAN THOMAS

ANCHOR BLAKE HANSON

Facebook is looking pretty solid ahead of its IPO. The social network issued an amended S-1 Monday, which included financials for the latest quarter.

Facebook made in excess of $1 billion in revenue for the quarter ending in March. That’s a 45 percent jump from last year, but it’s also a six percent drop from last quarter. And net income sank by 32 percent from December. The Wall Street Journal explains.

“Their employees are also up 57 percent, compensation expense is up a ton, marketing expense is up a ton. So that’s the reason we’re seeing profit come down.”

But that decline hasn’t hurt Facebook — the S-1 numbers value the company at some $77 billion. And Facebook said it’s passed the 900-million-monthly-user mark to boot.TechCrunch puts that in perspective.

“With 901 million users and 7.009 billion Earthlings, now one in 7.7 people in the world have a Facebook account.”

SlashGear suggests there’s only one reason Facebook will stop growing.

“Facebook has not reached that point of diminishing returns yet. Eventually, the number of people signing up for an account will have to taper off because, well, there won’t be that many people left.”

And Facebook is holding onto its users. Social Internet Fund founder Lou Kerner tells Bloomberg — more than half of of those 901 million people log in on a daily basis.

“The majority of Facebook’s users are highly engaged, and in fact they’re growing as a percentage of the total Facebook userbase. And that’s really positive for Facebook.”

Positive, Engadget says, because each user makes Facebook a little more money.

“Facebook was even able to slap a per-user amount on its 900 million active monthly members — $1.21 — that’s the average revenue for each person with an account at the site.”

Shareholders are going to want to see those returns climbing when Facebook goes public. And for the moment, it looks like growing revenue will be as simple as signing up more users.

Transcript by Newsy

BY LOGAN TITTLE

A German court ruled Friday – Google needs to pump up protection.

A suit filed back in 2010 by GEMA—the German royalty agency representing roughly 60,000 artists—claimed YouTube had violated copyright laws on specific pieces of music uploaded by users.

Arstechnica.com explains—

“The court ruled that once a YouTube post has been flagged, the company must use its monitoring software to make sure that further copyright infringement does not occur, which would include live recording and alternate mixes.”

In the case, YouTube argued it wasn’t responsible for any user-generated content, but was merely a place to share it. The Hamburg District Court said that’s true—until it has been informed of copyright infringement.

Google isn’t expressing any hard feelings though—telling The New York Times—

“‘The ruling is a partial success for the music industry in general, for our users as well as artists, composers, YouTube and other Web platforms in Germany.’”

But the BBC says Google might not be holding their head high for very long.

“If YouTube is forced to pay royalties for all the clips used on the site it will face a huge bill…the ruling could also slow the rate at which video is posted to the site as many music clip would have to be cleared for copyright before being used…it is estimated that about 60 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube worldwide every minute.”

And a member of the digital rights group EDRi told Computerworld – Google shouldn’t be the only company concerned about the filter flux.

“‘It is another step towards the privatization and very fallible automation of our rights to communicate online. How healthy is the cultural life of a society which effectively bans itself from parody and mash-up of existing cultural expressions?’”

BusinessWeek reports Google will review the 30-page verdict before making any decisions.

BY SUZANA DALUL

ANCHOR CHRISTINA HARTMAN

Instagram occupied the headlines for more than a week and now has another reason to celebrate. The app that is not even 2-years-old recently hit its 40 millionth user.TechCrunch reports:

“Since the launch of its Android app, Instagram’s user base grew from 30 to 40 million. That’s over 1,000,000 new users a day.”

The app, even embraced by president Obama, can probably thank not just the press coverage, but Android users for its growth. Tweaktown explains, the power of the Google’s operating system should not be underestimated:

“… Android users can’t be ignored by app developers. Most of the new users probably came from the news of the acquisition and Android users going onto Google Play and downloading it like it had always been there”

But not everyone is rejoicing for Instagram. NPR reports some users were disappointed by the changes made.

“Instagram’s new ties to Android and Facebook have not been universally popular. The Facebook deal, in particular, led some users to announce that they would be leaving the photo-sharing community and deleting the app from their phones.”

Others, however, worry this is just the next tech bubble about to burst. A writer for the Guardian expresses his doubts:

“A company with no revenues and barely any staff gets acquired for a billion dollars? It has to be a bubble, doesn’t it?”

Nevertheless, Venture Beat thinks the photo-editing and sharing service has found a formula for success.

“The photo sharing app may not have a legitimate revenue stream yet, but it has stumbled upon a secret to crazy fast growth. It proves that users are far more valuable than actual revenue.”

Transcript by Newsy

BY LAURA JANVIER

ANCHOR MEGAN MURPHY

Pinterest made waves last December when it became a top 10 social network.
Now, an Experian report has moved it up to number 3.

The social network site lets users “pin” images they find on the web to their virtual pinboards and the faster users continue to consume, create, and share the faster Pinterest will continue to grow. (YouTube)

Digital Trends says after seeing a large increase in traffic between January and February, the site is growing more popular than other social media sites.

“The new Experian report says Pinterest’s traffic surged 50 percent between February and January of this year, which is growth that’s stunning in itself. That surge has allowed the site to overtake services like Tumblr, LinkedIn, and Google+.”

Pinterest’s strategy of pinning has worked so well, VentureBeat says, many competitors are trying to mimic the trend.

“There are travel-focused sites like Trippy, Wanderfly, and Gtrot. There’s several dude-focused sites like Mantersting and Gentlemint.”

Popularity aside, Geekosystem reports, to be truly successful, Pinterest needs to figure out how to start making money.

“How the service will capitalize on this growth — or monetize it — remains unclear. One thing is certain: Now that a major marketing analytics firm has declared it a top-three social site, users should brace themselves for an even bigger push from marketers on the service.”

This graph by CNET shows just how dramatically Pinterest’s internet traffic rose. The site barely registers before late July 2011, then it explodes to more than 20 million by the end of January 2012.

Ahead of Pinterest on Experian’s social media rankings? Facebook and Twitter.
