Microsoft revealed a new logo for Windows 8 on Friday, but instead of resembling a colorful flag it looks more like an actual … window.

The company hopes the new logo reflects the origins of Microsoft with a “metro style design.” When they refer to origins they’re talking about this 1.0 logo from the 1980s.

A design agency called Pentagram helped create the new logo. Microsoft unveiled it on the Windows Team Blog. There, Windows’ principal director of user experience Sam Moreau wrote:

“‘Windows’ really is a beautiful metaphor for computing and with the new logo we wanted to celebrate the idea of a window, in perspective. Microsoft and Windows are all about putting technology in people’s hands to empower them to find their own perspectives. And that is what the new logo was meant to be.”

Tech writers were quick to critique the new four-square design, like CNET’s Jay Green.
He says while Microsoft aimed to lose the flag look, it still resembles one.

“The new logo looks a bit like the inverse of the flag of Finland. It’s a blue background with a thin white cross in the middle, making the logo look like a window…”

Venture Beat’s Sean Ludwig isn’t too impressed, either. He compares the new design to a different logo mishap.

“…the results aren’t pretty. You might say this is Microsoft’s Gap moment, that uncomfortable situation in which a company chooses a new logo that takes away from its history and chooses blandness over anything striking.”

Not everyone is against the new design. A writer for Stark Insider points out the positives.

“The new Windows 8 logo is a winner. Here’s why:
– most timeless logos… are simple, and devoid of unnecessary design elements.
– effective logos are clean, modern…
– angular, strong lines connote strength.”

And a writer for SlashGear argues the new Windows logo is less bland and most convincing when the four squares are in motion.

Here’s a clip of the animation from Pentagram:

According to BetaNews you can expect the consumer preview of Windows 8 within the next two weeks.
